You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.
As a class 12th student, you don’t have a lot of time to spend in career plan-ning because of the academic pressures. You might be in a fix about various career options after 12 th. You may be too busy to visit a career counsellor regularly or attend seminars and workshops during this course. So ideally choosing a career or “giving wings to your dreams” can be started as early as 9th grade. It could be done at various stages to give you clarity and narrow down your window of options.
The key pointers to a successful process are:
- Self awareness
- Opportunity awareness
- Decision making
- Taking action
Self awareness would include your skills, values, interests and personality and plays an important role in your career opportunity. This could also determine your strengths and passion. Once you do some self analysis, you could gather information on various opportunity windows opening to you.
At school level also, one could get exposed to work internships and go beyond the standard list of professions. This could give an insight into the everyday working of a professional’s life. There are times when, what we expect is not really what we get!
Its important to assess one’s social needs since you would be spending a lot of time with the people you work with, so the career option needs to be a good social fit. If you are a loner, then maybe you won’t enjoy a job involving marketing and sales. Once you short list your options, its important to get down to some detailed research which includes, universities and colleges, finances, test preparations, applications, crucial timelines.
Seeing a counsellor and discussing about career goals would be an excellent idea from time to time. You, you family along with the counsellor could zero down to some option tailored to your personality.
Its good to start early instead of making a hasty choice at the last moment.
